There are over 300 known supernova remnants (SNRs) in M31 and M33. Such an extensive data set of SNRs has the potential to address many important problems relating to the evolution of SNRs and their interaction with the interstellar media (ISM) of M31 and M33. The focus of this paper is the relationship between the SNRs and the ISM of M31 and M33. This paper reviews the general observable properties of SNRs resulting from their interaction with the ISM. Existing results are summarized and an analysis is presented. A comparison of radio, X-ray and optical data suggests that the ISM of M31 and M33 are multi-phase and that the primary medium in which the detected SNRs evolve is analogous to the warm interstellar medium (WIM) of our own Galaxy. The optically selected SNRs in M31 and M33 have been used to quantify metallicity gradients. It is found that [NII]/Hα drops by roughly 10% for each kpc from the center of each galaxy. Radio continuum flux densities of SNRs appear to increase with the density of the ISM local to the SNRs in agreement with the theory.
