M31 is an ideal testbed for studying global star formation processes in spiral galaxies. However, its proximity to us is also a major drawback for submillimetre observing, as it is very difficult to subtract sky emission over degree-size scales. Recently, a new fast-scanning technique has been developed for the SCUBA camera at the JCMT, allowing us to map continuously regions up to 45 arcmin across. We have thus begun a complete map of M31 in submillimetre dust emission, at a wavelength of 850 micron, and some preliminary results are discussed here. Large cloud complexes have been detected, with peaks corresponding to bright far-infrared knots but extending over much greater distances and not limited to the narrow 10 kpc star-forming ring. This cold diffuse dust could add substantially to the total ISM mass of M31, and be comparable to the cold Galactic dust suggested by COBE data.
