This volume presents our current knowledge of the interstellar medium in the two spiral galaxies nearest to us, based on a meeting held in Bad Honnef, Germany, May 21-25, 2000. The interstellar medium (ISM) is a rich laboratory for astronomical research as the space between the stars in spiral galaxies is filled with a variety of gases, neutral as well as ionized, dust grains, cosmic rays and magnetic fields. Our neighbouring galaxies in the Local group, M31 and M33, are of special interest, because their proximity enables high-resolution observations down to parsec-scales. Yet, in spite of their large extent on the sky, they can be fully surveyed in many wavelength ranges using new technical developments and observational techniques. During the last few years quite a number of new data sets probing the ISM in M31 and M33 have become available: Radio continuum, X-rays, Hα, Infrared, CO, HI, optical extinction. The latest results of research in these various wavelength ranges are presented here. Five chapters cover the following main fields: I. The neutral gas: large-scale surveys in HI and CO, properties and extent of the atomic gas, molecular cloud complexes, comparisons with the Milky Way. II. Dust and extinction: large-scale surveys with ISO and SCUBA, properties of dust in M31, extinction in M31. III. The warm ionized gas: large-scale surveys in Hα, properties of the ionized gas, luminosity function of HII regions, planetary nebulae, supernova remnants and the ISM. IV. The hot ionized gas: diffuse X-ray emission, X-ray source population, CHANDRA observations, UV emission. V. Cosmic rays and magnetic fields: large-scale surveys in radio continuum, global magnetic field structures from observations and theory, supernova remnants and cosmic rays. VI. Overview: summary and future outlook. The wealth of new information on so many aspects of the ISM in M31 and M33 as contained in this book will be of interest to all researchers studying the ISM in external galaxies and the Milky Way.
