The paper describes the basic design and some of the requirements of the Scan Mirror Assembly (SMA), which represents a complete system for two-coordinate control of the primary mirror of the Mars Observer Pressure Modulator Infrared Radiometer (PMIRR). The primary SMA components are characterized, and some structural analysis considerations are discussed. Design diagrams for the SMA and the primary mirror of the PMIRR are presented.
