NTT high resolution imaging (FWHM = 0.55 arcsec) of PKS 0537-441, proposed as a case of gravitationally lensed blazar, shows that the source (z = 0.894) is unresolved, thus failing to detect the alleged presence of a foreground galaxy along the line of sight. As a consequence, the case for a gravitational lensing effect to account for the properties of the source is substantially weakened.
