The opacities of the October 1973 dust storm, occurred on Mars, were estimated by analyzing negatives exposed at Hida Observatory. We solved the equation of radiative transfer by the discrete ordinate method, applying the Minnaert formula to the ground reflectivity which constrains one of the boundary conditions of the equation. The opacity over Solis Lacus area was 3-5 in the initial phase of the storm, and 3-4 over Hellas in the early decay phase, when the dust cloud over Hellas was still active. The bright and dark contrast of Syrtis Major was extremely low in the early decay phase. The decrease of contrast suggests that the opacity over Syrtis Major was about 2.
