The paper provides the position of the apex derived from the proper motions of 5800 stars from the 'Bright Star Catalog'. It is shown that the scatter of the apices of the different subsamples is rather large, a fact related to sample size. No relations of apex position with age, spectral range and/or luminosity class were found. We compared also the apices resulting from SAO and PPM proper motions, and found that although general agreement exists, large differences are present for the apices of B-type stars. A detailed analysis suggests the existence of a color term and/or effects to the smallness of the proper motions. We recommend the adoption of a solar apex located at l = 52 deg, b = 23 deg.
