The observation of the SN 1987a event suggested that the neutron star born in the supernova has collapsed (after approximately 5 h) into a black hole. This paper suggests an alternative explanation of the observations from SN 1987a, which has its origin in the grand unified theory (GUT) of electroweak and electrostrong interactions. The considerations based on the GUT suggest that a main contribution to the luminosity of SN 1987a comes from the e(+)/e(-) annihilation processes, and that the second neutrino pulse consists of two neutrino kinds, as was suggested by Hillebrandt et al. (1987).
