Blue spectral scans (λλ3600 - 5400, resolution 7.4 Å) of nine NGC 2419 giant star candidates (17.2 ≤ V0 ≤ 18.2) were obtained. [Fe/H] abundances were determined, indices for the G band, the λ3880 CN band and some strong atomic lines were also measured and discussed. The indices were calibrated by observations of giants in M3, M15, and M92, and checked by observations of field giants observed by Bond (1980). The present observations do not give strong support for a metallicity spread. A new V, B-V color-magnitude diagram based on photoelectrically calibrated photographic magnitudes is given, and proper motions are used to detect field stars. The giant sequence is narrow; this also indicates a small spread in metallicity. Nineteen giant stars were concurrently observed in the halo globular clusters NGC 4147, NGC 5053, M2, M5, and M53. Mean metallicities >[Fe/H]< of -1.85, -2.2, -1.7, -1.6, and -2.1, respectively, were derived for these clusters using the same calibration.
