The recently discovered soft X-ray excesses of many AGNs furnish new data on the possible energy distribution of the ionizing continuum and may therefore lead to important implications for photoionization calculations. Attention is presently given to the effect on the emission-line spectrum of continuum energy distributions characterized by strong, soft X-ray components. The soft X-ray flux at 105 eV should be no more than about 15 percent of the Lyman limit flux, if the predicted He II/H-beta is to be consistent with the typically observed value of less than 0.3 for the narrow-line region of AGNs.
