From a morphological survey of galaxies in environments with different galaxy densities (field, group, cluster) it is found that the galaxies in the field predominantly have unperturbed morphologies. In contrast 30% of the galaxies in the groups and 16% of the galaxies in the cluster surveyed show morphological disturbances. If these disturbances are due to tidal interactions between galaxies, if the tidal interaction rate has remained constant throughout the past, and if the morphological signs of the interactions have life times of 109years, it follows that virtually every galaxy not located in the field has undergone tidal interaction within one Hubble time.
