The authors present spectroscopic observations of Wolf-Rayet star candidates in the nearby irregular galaxy IC 1613. Only one, which was known previously, is a W-R star. This leads the authors to re-assess the value of the various survey methods used for finding W-R stars in external galaxies. They rediscuss the existing statistics of W-R stars and other types of massive stars in our Galaxy and in some nearby galaxies and show that metallicity is the dominant factor which defines the production of W-R stars, in agreement with the conclusions of Maeder et al. (1980).
