The Ne V 24.28 μm infrared line has been observed in three planetary nebulae by Shure et al. The authors re-analyse their results using the new collision strength calculations. The Ne V abundance is reduced by a factor of 4 for NGC 7354 and 7662, but increased for NGC 7027, suggesting that the electron density derived from high-ionization species in NGC 7027 is overestimated. The Ne V infrared line flux from NGC 7662 is combined with the 3426 Å flux to obtain a Ne V electron temperature of 18500±4500K, removing the discrepancy with model nebulae calculations found by Shure et al. The calculations suggest that the ratio of the 14.3 μm line to the 3426 Å line is a good temperature diagnostic for electron densities <104cm-3.
