The importance of meteoric particles as ice nuclei in noctilucent clouds (NLC) is considered. In order for NLC to exist, low temperature and high water-vapor pressure are necessary; and over the temperature range 120-150 K, the ice particles exhibit a cubic structure rather than a hexagonal one. The nucleation of NLC ice particles is by heterogeneous nucleation from the vapor, caused by active deposition of ice nuclei in the mesopause region. A systematic search of crystallographic data is made for substances with similar crystal structures and good matching with regard to cubic ice Ic. The results indicate that the substances which include Fe(1-x)O, MnO, MgO, and NiO are good candidates to be considered as active ice nucleants and that the nucleus structure is important in determining the ice structure nucleated. NLC are also of interest in the changes that occur in the radiation budget of the earth/atmosphere system and in the context of planetary atmospheres.
