The study of asteroids as collision-modified analogs of the planetesimals assumed to have mediated between interstellar matter and the planets and stars is discussed in a review of recent and planned observational studies. The asteroid belt and proposed mechanisms of its formation are characterized; the near-earth asteroids and the possibility of obtaining material samples from them are considered; and the CCD-detector Spacewatch camera at KPNO is described. Tables, graphs, photographs, paintings, drawings, and diagrams are provided, and a list of current asteroid projects is appended.
