It is pointed out that two suggestions in the literature for wide-angle monitoring of the sky, which is particularly useful for observing variable sources and gamma ray bursts, are in essence identical. One makes use of coded aperture imaging devices (CAIDs), the other, grazing incidence optics for soft X-rays up to several keV. The underlying principle, as well as the advantages and disadvantages, of wide field-of-view grazing incidence optics in astronomy is discussed. It is shown that focusing collimator and lobster eye type optics have properties that open new observational opportunities to X-ray astronomy. It is thought that the Wolter telescope and the focusing collimator are complementary instruments, each having a place in X-ray astronomy.
