A wide-ranging discussion is presented of the theoretical and observational aspects of the 'asteroid satellite' controversy. Theoretical difficulties with this hypothetical phenomenon involve the ease with which a stellar or planetary gravitational field would, on being entered by an asteriod, quickly deprive it of its orbiting object. Observationally, the main objection is the relatively poor quality of existing, purported records of satellite-caused asteroid occultation events. A photoelectric record of a stellar occultation by the Pallas asteroid, showing a secondary occultation, is brought as evidence of an orbital companion.
