A detailed analytical model for the propagation of extragalactic jets through various inhomogeneous media typical of extragalactic radio source environments is used to determine the trajectories, shapes and stability of extragalactic jets. The trajectory of a nonrelativistic jet is obtained in terms of its initial conditions and the nature of the surrounding medium, and it is found that significant jet bending can only occur if the characteristic Mach number is less than unity and the jet is initially directed at a large angle to the direction of the external pressure gradient. Ultrarelativistic jets are only found to bend through an angle equal to the inverse of the jet Lorentz factor in radians. Solutions are then obtained for the jet cross-sectional shape and internal pressure distribution for high Mach number flows. It is shown that a circular jet is stable with rapidly decreasing external pressures, and becomes unstable, with a flattened cross section, with increasing jet path length when the rate of external pressure decrease is sufficiently slow, leading to jet splitting and break-up.
