Models and hypotheses are reviewed which attempt to explain the origin of the violent activity observed in active galactic nuclei. Models based on both the infall of matter into a central object and the output of energy in the form of large-scale electromagnetic fields from the magnetosphere of a rotating supermassive object are examined. It is suggested that the dominant process involves the in situ reacceleration of preexisting electrons, regardless of whether the central 'black box' is a black hole or a spinar.
