Mineral and chemical compositions of 88 fragments of typical medium-Ti and four low-Ti Luna-16 basalts were determined. It was found that typical Luna-16 basalts, which can be classified as olivine ilmenite basalts, are represented by two textural groups (holocrystalline and hemicrystalline), which are isochemical but belong to different types of rock facies. The presence of liquidus-related alumino-titaneous chromite, plagioclase, and early high-Ca pyroxene in these fragments indicates that the initial magma was primarily enriched in CaO-Al2O3 phase, which represented the product of fractionation of poorly differentiated source in the deep interior.
