The temporal evolution of the gamma-ray intensity during solar flares in the energy range 0.12-6.5 MeV is analyzed. The data were obtained with the Ge gamma-ray burst detector on ISEE 3. The observations give additional evidence for the existence of an elementary event structure in gamma-ray flares, which has been previously reported for the X-ray component and therefore relate gamma- and X-radiation during impulsive solar flares. Investigation of the substructure of elementary events shows that these structures are not well correlated for one and the same elementary event, but repeat themselves with high correlation from one to the next elementary event across the gamma-ray burst. It is argued that these periodic variations could be explained by an arcade model where adjacent magnetic loops are triggered by thermal forces.
