Venus Magnetosphere: Solar Wind
Scientific paper
The appearance of the mass-loading effect at Venus is discussed. It is shown that the heavy ions which are formed from the neutral atmosphere that finds itself upstream of the shock wave front do not change the basic parameters of the solar wind flow (e.g., the Mach number); the number of ions participating in the mass-loading process and which are accelerated by the asymmetric large-scale electric field of the undisturbed solar wind amounts to no more than a few percent of the total flux of heavy ions that are carried from the day into the night side in the wake. The most intensive mass-loading of the solar wind occurs near the ionopause and is accompanied by the development of turbulence such that the plasma consisting of protons and heavy ions has hydrodynamic properties.
