The effect of zonal tides on the fluctuations of universal time is investigated, applying the theoretical model of Yoder et al. (1981) to data obtained using Danjon astrolabes, photoelectric astrolabes, and photoelectric meridian circles at the eight stations of the Chinese Time Service during 1966-1980. The basic principles underlying the computations are reviewed, and the results are expressed in terms of K/C ratios, where K is the effective Love number and C is the nondimensional principal moment of inertia of the earth, for the Mf and Mm wave components. The weighted averages from the eight stations are given as (K/C)Mf = 0.909 + or - 0.114 and (K/C)Mn = 0.905 + or - 0.083. The reasons for discrepancies among various astronomically and theoretically determined K/C values are discussed.
