Perturbations of the orbit of a geosynchronous satellite are investigated analytically using methods similar to those of Liu and Zhao (1979 and 1980). The kinds of fluctuations affecting the orbital parameters for GEO satellites are reviewed; a simplified analytical method for calculating the variation is derived; and the results of sample computations are shown to be in excellent agreement with those obtained by numerical solution of the equations. Consideration is given to the determination of the position and velocity of the satellite and the problem of the orbit during the initial transition stage.
