The observed X-ray luminosities of M dwarfs are too large to result from a direct conversion of their modest rotational energies; hence, they must derive ultimately from nuclear energy sources. The relevant measure of activity is therefore the ratio of coronal X-ray to bolometric luminosities. This quantity shows no significant decrease with lateness of spectral type in the range M0 to M6.
