Yearly histograms of the absolute values of Bz, the north-south component of the interplanetary field, were prepared and studied. The Bz values used were compiled by King (1975) and include all data available up to May 17, 1974. It is found that the histograms decrease exponentially from a maximum occurrence frequency at the absolute Bz-value of zero. The solar cycle variations of Bz are roughly correlated with the ordinary indicators of solar activity but differ distinctly from variations of the solar wind speed and of the geomagnetic Ap disturbance index. The relation between the sunspot number of the slope of the exponential decrease in the histograms is examined, and the cause of a sparsely populated high-value tail is considered.
