We measure the metallicity of the unusual hypervelocity star HE 0437-5439 to be half-solar, establishing its origin in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We find the star to be a B2 III-IV with a temperature of Teff = 22000 +/- 1000K and surface gravity of log(g) = 4.00 +/- 0.25 dex. We also present BV time series photometry showing that the star is not variable at the 0.02 mag level. We refine the magnitude to V= 16.36 +/- 0.04 mag, with a color B-V= -0.23 +/- 0.03 mag, confirming the early-type nature of the star and implying a greater distance from our Galaxy. The fact that HE 0437-5439 originated in the LMC implies the existence of an intermediate mass black hole somewhere in this galaxy.
