The questions is raised of whether Zwicky's compact galaxies represent a distinct class of galaxy. Several samples of compact galaxies are compared with ordinary galaxies in terms of appearances on sky-survey photographs, surface brightness profiles, spectroscopy, colors, and spatial distributions. The results indicate that compact galaxies do not appear to form a distinct class of galaxy, are almost all spirals and ellipticals, and are in part a property of the Palomar Sky Survey. It is suggested that compact galaxies are probably conventional spiral and elliptical galaxies deficient in their outer regions and that tidal stripping in past encounters with other galaxies is the most likely explanation for their compact status.
