Two lunar farside craters, Gagarin (260 km in diameter) and Aitken (150 km in diameter), are examined for evidence of the recurrent volcanism that seems to be characteristic of nearside maria. For this purpose, a comparison is made between observed volcanic phenomena on the nearside and the farside of the moon. Possible volcanism-related features of the two craters are described, particularly their flat lava floors, superposed craters, low mounds that may be volcanic vents, and other rounded mounds that tend to occur in clusters. Probable time sequences for the volcanic events which followed the impact events that produced the craters Gagarin and Aitken are suggested, and differences between these craters and nearside maria are noted. The observations are taken as giving strong support to the thesis that recurrent volcanism occurs in lunar farside craters.
