A program used for Doppler imaging that directly computes the abundances and uses model-atmosphere-based local line profiles in the surface reconstruction is discussed and tested. Emphasis is on the accuracy with which the abundances are reconstructed from artificial stellar profiles and not with the distortions of surface features under test conditions. Consideration is given to the degradation of local abundance that occurs when this program is run on sets of profiles calculated from a test star where circumstances have been chosen to highlight both the best and the worst recovery of information that can be expected for well-chosen real stars observed with state-of-the-art equipment. A benchmark for judging the results of the Doppler imaging of real Ap stars in future publications is provided.
