Eddy's (1977) study of historical records of solar activity (sunspot number) is summarized. The data reveal the existence of the Maunder minimum, a period between 1645 and 1715 of minimum solar activity. Tree-ring studies show that an anomalously high concentration of C-14 was incorporated into trees during this period. The reason for this correlation is explained, and several other periods of minimum and maximum solar activity were determined from tree-ring data. During years of minimum activity the world climate was colder than average, while periods of maximum activity were warmer than average. These findings indicate that solar features can affect the earth's climate.
