The possible locations of in situ particle acceleration in extended radio sources are reviewed and some basic requirements for the underlying acceleration processes are discussed. Besides standard shock acceleration which appears to be established in radio hot spots, there seems to operate a distributed acceleration process in jets. Presumably this `jet-like' acceleration is based on electro-magnetic processes.
