SIM is a space astrometric interferometer capable of 1 uas single measurement accuracy. A search optimized to find Earth Clones in the middle of the habitable zone of nearby stars would result in 64 Earth Clones if every star had an Earth clone. However, not every star has an Earth clone in the middle of its habitable zone. With the 200 known planets outside our solar system, astrophysical theorists have built numerical models of planet formation that roughly match the distribution Jovian planets discovered to date and those models predict that the number of terrestrial planets (< 10 Earth mass) would far exceed the number of more massive Jovian planets. This paper describes how the SIM observing program can be optimized for a potentially more realistic distribution of exo-terrestrial planets to maximize the science return.
