The Mileura Wide-field Array Low Frequency Demonstrator is a proposed low frequency observatory that has been optimized for survey science. The design of LFD has been seen as both aggressive and innovative, and incorporates a number of unique design features. In this paper I introduce the LFD and discuss the design process and principles that led to the final design. We feel that insight into our process could benefit other teams who are working to design future radio observatories.
