An interpretation of the Hubble morphological classification is discussed. Through the presentation of a number of lines of observational evidence, it is shown that two main classes of galaxies are recognizable: one contains spheroidal systems (elliptical galaxies); the other contains those galaxies showing both a spheroidal component and a disk (S0 and spiral galaxies). These two classes exhibit a strong discontinuity in angular momentum per unit mass.
