Astrometric, photometric, and spectrophotometric observations establish the red proper-motion star LP 701-29 as the intrinsically faintest known degenerate star. Broad-band photometry yields V = 15.66, B-V = 1.88, and (V-I)KM = 1.07. A trigonometric parallax determination gives an absolute parallax of 0.123 min + or - 0.005 min corresponding to an absolute magnitude of 16.11 + or - 0.09. The extreme redness of the B-V color results from a heavily blanketed blue spectrum. Identifiable features include strong Ca I and probable Ca II and Na I. The spectrum is nearly featureless over the wavelength range 5000-7000 A and can be fitted by a blackbody with an effective temperature of 4200 K. The energy distribution is compared with that of VB 11, the previous intrinsically faintest known degenerate star.
