We present a review of the astronomical facilities and observatories now
in operation and in construction on the Chajnantor Plateau. This high
altitude plateau is located in the second region of Chile, near San
Pedro de Atacama, and has been declared a scientific area. ALMA and
several other astronomical facilities are being built in this region.
