A calibration technique for photographic spectrograms, based on the spectral modulation imposed on a continuum light source by a Lyot filter element, is presented. The technique requires less space on spectrum plates than conventional methods, which makes it especially useful for Coude spectrographs. Tests of a device employing the calibration technique show that it provides a greater accuracy in determining relative intensities than the step-filter method; when the calibration device is adopted for the measurement of equivalent widths of H-gamma for standard stars, the results prove to be in good agreement with published data.
