We present photometric and spectroscopic data of SN 2003gd, the first type II supernova (SN) to have a directly confirmed red supergiant progenitor. We compare SN 2003gd with SN 1999em, a similar type II-P SN, estimating an explosion date of 18th March 2003. SN 2003gd was found to have a lower tail luminosity compared with other ``normal'' type II-P SNe bringing into question its nature. So, is this a ``normal'' type II-P SN or something a bit more peculiar? We discuss this and the implications for the progenitor.
