Examples are presented which illustrate the range of problems to which high resolution X-ray detectors can be applied. Attention is given to development efforts currently underway for the development of three specific devices: a CCD-based imaging spectrometer, a microchannel plate high resolution imager, and a phosphor-based, X-ray-to-visible light converter. These devices will collectively provide both the high spatial resolution and moderate energy resolution needed for the advancement of X-ray data quality. In the focal plane of a large area, high quality X-ray telescope such as the AXAF, these devices will achieve a sensitivity that is almost two orders to magnitude greater than that of the Einstein Observatory.
