The present conference on advanced optical telescope technologies covers the broad topics of multiple mirror telescope (MMT) performance, telescope design and construction projects currently underway, telescope design features, active optics and image reconstruction, mirror manufacturing, and the control and alignment of optics. Among the specific topics discussed are the mechanical properties, pointing and tracking, and computer systems of the MMT, the University of Texas 7.6 m telescope project, the effects of primary mirror segmentation on telescope image quality, wind loading of large astronomical telescopes, telescope mirror supports, deformable mirrors, modal control for adaptive optics wavefront reconstruction, the manufacture of large honeycomb glass mirrors, the computer-controlled polishing of telescope mirror segments, and optimum shapes for lightweight mirrors.
