When completed, the University of Arizona's four-channel photometer will obtain redshift estimates for distant elliptical galaxies to at least 10 percent accuracy in 15-20 min integrations with the Multiple Mirror Telescope. Three dichroic filters allow the four channels to be measured simultaneously, allowing redshifts to be determined from a comparison of visual and IR colors with those expected from a redshifted standard elliptical galaxy spectrum. The diodes used by the channels will be operated at liquid He temperatures in order to reduce thermal background and preamp noise, while the photomultiplier operates at room temperature, using magnetic defocusing. Attention is given to instrument design features.
