An introduction is given to recent developments in VLBI at a meeting to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the VLBA. Highlights include the detailed study of extragalactic and Galactic jets, the monitoring of masers in accretion disks and outflows, the study of supernovae and their remnants and the imaging of gravitationally lensed radio sources. Recent and achievable improvements in the sensitivity and resolution of the technique coupled with the push to shorter wavelengths promise fundamental and far-reaching contributions to astronomy and physics over the next decade. In particular, VLBI should be capable of probing strong field gravity, of measuring accurate distances and motions beyond the local group and of greatly advancing our understanding of how stars form, evolve and die.
