NEWFIRM is a widefield (27.6 x 27.6 arcmin) near-infrared camera for the NOAO 4-m telescopes. This instrument is the front end of a system for executing deep widefield IR survey projects. The camera saw first light on the KPNO 4-m in January 2007, with an additional observing run in April-May. I present initial performance characterization information for potential users. I also describe the Science Verification projects which are underway, with some early results. These will include first light narrowband emission line images of the Orion starforming region in [Fe II], Brackett gamma, and molecular hydrogen. The Science Verification projects are testing the system end-to-end and producing publicly accessible data sets with follow-on value.
