The interaction of the sun with giant molecular clouds (GMC) will result in the loss of comets from the Oort cloud. It is shown that regeneration of the Oort cloud cannot occur by the capture of interstellar cometesimals. It is also shown, in an examination of the total density of matter near the sun, that the chemical evolution of the galactic disk was not significantly influenced by heavy elements locked up in interstellar cometesimals.
