An examination of available experimental data shows that the source of fading geomagnetic pulsations with a period of 150-600 sec, observed at auroral latitudes in the form of single packets or their series, is extramagnetospheric forces, leading to a powerful compression (SC and positive Si) or expansion (negative Si) of the magnetosphere. The pulsations are most intense at the boundary of closed field lines, corresponging to the capture boundary of electrons with energies of 30-40 keV. Intensity oscillations of charged particles with energies ranging from several tens to several hundreds of keV are also observed at this time; these oscillations have a maximum modulation depth near the capture boundary of particles of corresponding energy.
