Spectra at 25 kms-1 resolution of the V = 1 yields 0 S(1) line of H, and H alpha and (N II) lambda 6583 in the protoplanetary nebula CRL 618 are presented. The H2 line is 100 kms wide, full width at zero intensity, and blueshifted 15 kms-1 from the CO line centroid. By comparing centroid velocities, line widths and extinctions of the various observed lines it is postulated that the excited H2 molecules are located in dense clumps near the inner boundary of the dust toroid and that these clumps are participating in the mass outflow.
