It is pointed out that investigations related to the development of Spacelab were first essentially concerned with the system Shuttle/Spacelab. In current studies, the case is considered in which Spacelab remains alone in space without the support of the Space Shuttle. The concept of a free-flying European platform is considered, taking into account experiments utilizing space microgravity conditions. Other application areas are related to the study of the terrestrial surface by remote sensing, astronomy, technology demonstration missions, and biological missions. Attention is given to the introduction of Spacelab elements in American platforms and space stations, the large autonomous European platform Euros, and a synthesis of the various projects.
