Classical novae are proposed as an alternative source for the nitrogen enrichment of the ISM. The abundances of nova ejecta and planetary nebulae together with their masses and rates of occurrence in the Magellanic Clouds and M31 are compared, and indications are found that novae currently eject more N into the ISM of these galaxies than do the planetary nebulae. The N ejected from novae could have been processed from C and O via the CNO cycle, or it may have been produced from C which was created by He-burning during the nova outburst.
