Measurements of the equivalent widths of the 5780 and 5797 A diffuse interstellar bands in the spectra of stars with low color excesses show that the bands are strong where the column densities of interstellar H2 are high, and weak or absent where the H2 column density is low. The agent responsible for the bands appears to be molecular, although abundance considerations seem to preclude gas phase molecules, suggesting molecular grain mantles as the carrier of the diffuse interstellar bands.
